Broadcast Hill
The Paskapoo slopes, on Calgary’s western ridge, house Broadcast Hill with CTV’s television station and transmission tower, and Canada Olympic Park, with its ski hills and jumps. The complete panorama of the tower and slopes were the view from my work-space and the inspiration for this series, which was created between November, 2023 and April, 2024.
‘Broadcast Hill’, the series, consists of 283 drawings, 14" x 5 1/4", mixed media, on Stonehenge paper. A simple paper template was constructed to represent the hill in some form in all 286 drawings. At the beginning of the series, the template was placed in the lower third of the paper, with ample space left above for Calgary’s skies to entertain. This formula was short lived. It will become apparent as the viewer travels through the series, that the template shape appears to reposition itself, multiply, bend, roll, recompose itself and finally let go of its original structure.
In this series, the slopes are the conduit illustrating events experienced in real time. Each drawing is its own episode or part of a sub series contained within the larger body of the completed works. These variations of a scene, serve as a visual record of events. They are a narrative representing states of mind in which emotions are expressed as images in the format of a hill scape.
